October 1932 - Thousands of Unemployed Men Taken Under Government Wing

Thousands of men were roaming the country looking for employment without success. In October of 1932 the Canadian Federal Government realized that action needed to be taken to deal with the single, homeless, unemployed men meandering about the country looking for work. Ottawa established a series of camps under the control of the Department of National Defense. The men were provided sustenance, cloths and shelter and paid 20 cents a day. In exchange the men provided the labour on several make-work projects.

Disillusionment with the camps spurred the men to leave and this would lead to the On-to-Ottawa Trek and the Regina Riot.

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society now offers a $10.00 day pass for non-members to access "members only" databases. At present the pass is only available at the Library and Research Room. SGS plans to offer the pass for online access to patrons who are not able to visit the library in person.

Did you say "No" on the 2006 Census? -You Can Reverse Your Decision

On the 2006 Census of Population, individuals were given the option to decide if they wanted their information released in 92 years. They were asked to check “yes” or “no” to Question 53 (long form) and/or Question 8 (short form). Approximately 56% of Canadians said “yes”. Therefore 44% said “no” or left the question blank. 44% of Canadians are now lost to those descendants who may wish to search for them in future years. If you are concerned that perhaps you make the wrong decision and would like to have your information available to your descendants, you can now have it reversed. Statistics Canada has provided a “Request to change response to the consent question on the 2006 Census of Population” form. It can be accessed at:

The records include one million names found in birth records from 1864 to 1877, marriages from 1864 to 1930, and death records from 1864 to 1877 and 1908 to 1955. They have a very large collection of original images of newspapers that can be viewed online. Although some of their newspaper series are not complete it certainly provides an excellent start to newspaper research. One drawback is that the newspapers cannot be searched.

Launch of "Upper Canada Land Board"

Ottawa, December 2, 2010 – Library and Archives Canada is pleased to announce the launch of a new online database, "Upper Canada Land Board (1765–1804)."

Through this online database, researchers can access more than 16,000 references to documents of the Upper Canada Land Board between 1765 and 1804. The Land Boards were created in 1789 to oversee land matters and facilitate settlement in the districts of Hesse, Luneburg, Mecklenburg and Nassau. This territory is now part of the province of Ontario.

Launch of "Census of the Prairie Provinces, 1916"

Ottawa, December 16, 2010 — Library and Archives Canada is pleased to make the 1916 census of the Prairie provinces available online.

In order to track the high rates of population growth in western Canada during the early years of the 20th century, the Canadian government called for a special census of the Prairie provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta). The first census was conducted in 1906, followed by another in 1916.

Access to the digitized images of the 1916 census is available online in two different ways:
Through a database that is searchable by Province, District Name, District Number, and Sub-district Number. The database is available at:www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1916/index-e.html

The National Archives of Ireland has announced that the 1901 Census material, with all data transcribed, will be launched on or before 03 June 2010. The date for every county will be launched all at once rather than in tranches as with the 1911 Census.

Canadian Naturalization Database

Library and Archives of Canada. 22 July 2009:

New Version of the Canadian Naturalization 1915-1932 database

This database now includes the names of 206,731 individuals who applied for and received status as naturalized Canadians from 1915 to 1932. This database is one of the few Canadian genealogical recources specifically designed to benefit those researchers with roots outside of the British Commonwealth. References located in the database can be used to request copies of the actual naturalization records, which are held by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Without the contribution of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal (http://jgs-montreal.org) and its volunteers, this project would not have been possible. The Historical Canadian Census Collection

The launch of the Historical Canadian Censuses, 1851 to 1916, is to take place in Toronto on the 10 June 2009. The launch of these online records is the result of the partnership of ancestry.ca with the Library and Archives of Canada. All of the available national censuses of Canada will be published online, fully indexed and will include original document images on the Library and Archives of Canada web site at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca as well as on ancestry.ca.

I am pleased to announce the arrival of 13 reels of microfilm containing the Saskatchewan portion of the 1916 Census in the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society's Library and Research Room. This purchase was made possible due to a very generous and much appreciated donation received from the estate of Mr. Barret D. Halderman. Mr. Halderman had been a member of the Society since 1975. The following reels are available to SGS members:

There is a very unique, ongoing obituary collection in the Library and Research Room of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS). These obituaries are filed by surname on index cards and are stored in card-file boxes in the library.

There are about 750,000 obituary clippings from various newspapers throughout Saskatchewan and include people who were born in or lived at some time in Saskatchewan. Most of the obituaries date from the 1980s to 2001. However, there are many for years prior to the 1980s and some date back into the late 1800s!

We are presently scanning and indexing all of the obituaries in our collection and hope to have a partial index of them on our web site by June of this year (2009), with updates to follow periodically thereafter, until the indexing of them is completed.

If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact Diane Anderson (mornings only) at the SGS, phone (306) 780-9207. You don’t have to live in Regina to be an indexing volunteer!
