This Weeks Brickwall, Can you help?

Henry McCord 1823c-1884

 Can anyone suggest sources in Canadian Records 1823-1842 that we are missing that will lead us to a place of birth? We are searching for the birthplace of my husbands ggg grandfather in Ireland. Henry McCord 1823c-1884.

Henry died 16 April 1884 North Gower, Carleton County, Ontario. Info taken from headstone. He is buried in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Cemetery in Richmond, no record can be found in the death index either online or microfilm index. We’re told by the church secretary as well as the Presbyterian Archives that the church records of this time frame did not survive.

We have his will written 4 Aug 1884, 12 days before he died, he leaves everything to his wife Mary. She was born Upper Canada.

We have the papers produced when he purchased N1/2 Lot 2 Con 4 North Gower in April 1857 from Edward Malloch’s widow. The McCord family were on this land in the 1852 census and the Malloch’s lived in Bytown. We have traced the Malloch family in case they lead to a clue of Henry’s origin, no luck. We have land records but no place of birth is listed.

There is no place of birth mentioned on any of his 10 children’s birth, marriage nor death records. His marriage, 19 February 1842, was found in the Anglican Church Records Richmond, Ontario, again no place of birth. We have researched the witnesses at his marriage and nothing.

All census, 1851-1881, have him being born Ireland 1823-1825 and living on N1/2 Lot 2 Con 4 North Gower, Carleton County. We have not been able to locate him on any ship or immigration records. He would have come to Canada between 1823 and Feb 1842

I’m assuming he must be related to other McCord’s in the Carleton County, Ontario area and have checked their marriage, death and census records but have found no actual proof nor a place of origin for them other then Ireland.

John Collier Staples 1849-1850 ... Mother's Maiden Name

 

I have been trying to find out the names of my great grandfather’s parent’s and also the birth date of my great grandfather.

 I don’t believe his parents were married and I have no idea what his mother’s name was, although I think her last name was Staples.

This is the information I have so far on my maternal great grandfather:

Name: John Collier Staples

Born: 1849 – 1850
Died: Oct. 31, 1913 (have his obituary ribbon/bookmark) in Glossop, Derbyshire, England in his 64^th year.
Buried: Nov. 4, 1913 in Glossop Cemetery

 

Census 1851 – age 2
Name is John Staples – living/visiting with grandparents John and Mary Staples

Census 1861 – age 12

Name is John Staples living with grandmother Mary Wild and father Thomas Collier.  Mary Wild was formerly Mary Collier and married Joseph Wild in 1841.  I have their marriage certificate.

 Census 1871 – age 21

Name is now John Collier living with wife Hannah (Sykes) and father Thomas Collier and Selina Collier (who is only 12 years older than John so assuming she is John’s step-mother).

 Census 1881 – age 32

Name is John Collier – head of household married to Hannah with children, Hannah, James, Thomas and Alice

 Census 1891 – age 41

Name is now John C. Staples – head of household married to Hannah with children, Hannah (Ann) C, James C., Thomas C., Alice C., Robert C., Walter C. (my grandfather),  and John C., and Sarah Jane C.

All the children have now been given the middle initial C. (Collier).

 Census 1901 – age 51

Name John C. Staples – head of household married to Hannah C. Staples, with children Robert C., Walter C. (my grandfather), John C., Sarah C. (all last name of Staples)

Census 1911 – age 61

Name John Collier Staples – head of household married to Hannah Collier Staples with children Robert Collier, Alice Booth, John Collier, Sarah Collier and grandchildren Walter Booth, George Booth and Thomas Wood.

 I have a copy of John Collier Staples death certificate stating his name as John Collier Staples and his son Robert C. Staples present at his death.  He died from chronic bronchitis and heart failure at 55 King St., Glossop, Derbyshire, England.

 I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Hannah Sykes, married on Jan. 30^th, 1871 in Glossop.  He was a bachelor and Hannah a spinster.  Father’s name and surname is just a line drawn across for both of them.

 I have been searching on Ancestry.ca and also other genealogy sites, but no luck.  I did finally find some descendants of John’s daughter Alice Collier Staples who married Percy Booth, but they have no information other than what I have and they live in the Manchester area.

Amelia Davis, was indeed a cousin of Jefferson Davis.

I have been researching my family history for almost a year and have quite enjoyed it. In a nutshell, here is my brick wall:

 

There has always been the family gossip that we are related to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States. Last fall I managed to track my line to my great great great grandfather,  William Henry Murray of Paris Township, Linn County, Kansas, on the maternal side of my father. In reading Kansas history I did, in fact, find a biography that stated that his mother, Amelia Davis, was a cousin of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate Sates.

I have found a biography of Jefferson Davis from Rice University, that states the following about his father: 

 

Samuel Emory Davis, the father of Jefferson Davis, was born in Georgia around 1755-58. His father, Evan Davis, died soon after Samuel's birth, leaving his mother, Mary Emory Davis, to care for him and his two half brothers. Little is known of his formative years, but he was literate, indicating at least some formal education. Apparently following the lead of his half brothers, Samuel enlisted with the American forces soon after the beginning of the Revolution. He may have briefly been a member of a Georgia regiment, but the majority of his service was with South Carolina troops.

It appears as though Mary was married to a Williams, bore two sons, Daniel and Isaac, and became widowed. She then married Evan Davis and they had Samuel, who was to become the father of Jefferson Davis.

 

I'm not sure how valid this site is, but it states that Daniel and Isaac Williams were children from Mary Emory's first marriage. I believe that I am a descendent of Daniel.

My brick wall is twofold.

1. I would like to confirm that the mother of William Henry Murray, Amelia Davis, was indeed a cousin of Jefferson Davis.

2. I would like to find evidence that Daniel Williams Davis fought in the Revolutionary War as stated in the Jefferson Davis biography.

 

I have been in contact with the DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution, who, without seeing it, have verbally confirmed that my book of Kansas historical biographies should be considered a valid source.

“Brickwall” for Nick NYKULAIK

I am researching my wife’s side of the family and am seeking information for her paternal grandfather, Nick NYKULAIK.

Nick was born as Onufry NYKULAIK 1884 –1886 in Austria. His wife Anne KORSKI (or KORSKEWSKA) was born in Ukraine in 1891. It is unknown if they were married before or after they immigrated to Canada. They immigrated in 1911 or 1913. She was from Buxowina, Eastern Galicia, Ukraine. Possible immigration route would be Hamburg – Quebec or Ellis Island and then train to Winnipeg and on to Moose Jaw. I have been unable to locate them in any immigration data.

May 31, 1913 the Saskatchewan Border Crossing at North Portal shows Mrs A. MYKULAIK, age 21, born [1892] in Austria, travelling on train # 151 from Penn to Chaplin [about 50 miles west of Moose Jaw] to meet her husband.

In Canada, they were residing at 83 Home St. W. in Moose Jaw in 1916, 1921, 1940, and1945 (Nick now retired). In 1949, he lived at 53 Fairford St. E. in Moose Jaw.

Nick was a labourer and they attended the Greek Orthodox Church.

Their children were all born in Moose Jaw, SK.:

·         Anne b: 1914

·         Nick b: 1915

·         George b: 1918

·         Peter b: 1921

·         Mary b: 1925

Nick (d: 1948) and Annie (d: 1949)  NYKULAIK (senior) are buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw.

Alternate spellings I came across for NYKULAIK were; NICKOLIS, NYKULICK, NYKULIAK, MYKULAIK, NIKULIK, NYKULLCK, NYKULAK.

Records they were located in were:

·         1913 Border Crossing

·         1916 Canada Census

·         1918 Birth certificate for George

·         1921 Canada Census

·         1940 - 1949 List of Electors

·         1942 Marriage certificate for Nick (Jr.)

·         1948 Rosedale Cemetery

·         Stats Canada on 1940 National Registration Records for Nick (Sr.) and Anne.

·         SGS Obits for Nick (Sr.) and Anne.

·         Search of Church Records from Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Moose Jaw.

Maiden Name of Ann Johnson

1806c -died in Eastwood 30 September 1866, age 60, 

Where: Nottingham and area, England.

Who:       Thomas Johnson and Ann      ?         My maternal grandfather’s grandparents.

Thomas and Ann were the parents of Henry (Harry)  Johnson  (B 3 December 1848)my great grandfather. He was their last child.

Main challenge: Trying to discover the  maiden name of   Ann, to go into her family.

Also, which might help, if/when/where they were legally married, and how many children they had. (two possibles along with the sure ones)

Thomas Johnson was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire in 1805 He died in 1874, in Staffordshire. His parents were William Johnson and Sarah Severns (B1785)

Census findings:

1841  Thomas (Blacksmith, 35) and Ann (30) living in Eastwood, with their 6 (?) children so far.

Note- all the children have been located on baptismal records (LDS microfilm) except for the 2 oldest children, Charlotte(15) and Martha(12)   (Ann would have been only 15 when Charlotte was born, not impossible of course, but lack of evidence causes me to wonder if they were just being looked after there, perhaps a brother’s children.) There is no record for any of the children on Civil Registration records.(Even though there should have been after 1837) Another clue that may indicate there was no civil registration of their marriage.

1851  Thomas and Ann now have 3 more children, still living in Eastwood, on Nottingham Road. Thomas and his sons Thomas (18) and John (15) are all blacksmiths.

1861  Thomas and Ann Still living on Nottingham Road, with 4 children.

1871  Thomas living with his son George and family in Lichfield.  I am presuming Ann had died by this time. There is an Ann Johnson who was buried in St Mary’s Anglican,  Eastwood in 1866, age 60.  (National Burial Index for England and Wales)

Death: Ann Johnson in Eastwood 30 September 1866, age 60,

Death : 1874 Thomas was living at the home of his son George, in Lichfield.

I have searched parish records and other BMD records as much as I could, but nothing found.

Louis Levias Lucia (1833 – 1905),

Brickwall – I am unable to determine the birthplace of my husband’s great-great grandfather, Louis Levias Lucia (1833 – 1905), the name of Louis’ parents and whether he had any siblings. (Note: many spelling variations of each of his names exist on the various documents found!  Surname variations are: Lucia, Lucha, Luchia.  Middle name is also shown as Lovias. First name Louis or Lewis. )

What I do know:

Family story is the surname was Lucier and the family was of French Canadian origin.  LL Lucia and his wife, Catherine, moved to southern Alberta in 1904 following their sons, Albert and William.  LL Lucia filed for a homestead but died soon after and the homestead transferred to Catherine.

KENT COUNTY MARRIAGE REGISTER  1857 – 1869:

Louis Insha/Vasha* age 22 of Harwich born Vermont son of Anthony & Mary marrried 8 March 1858 Catherine E. Baldwin age 18 of Harwich daughter of Samuel & Delilah.

*Transcription error with surname, obvioulsy handwriting was not legible.  I have observed an original specimen of his signature and can understand how the transcriber used this spelling. 

Military Service: 1866, L L Lucha received a medal for serving during the Fenian Raids.  The appeal for medals was long and drawn out.  Source: The First 200 years of Blenhiem & South Harwich

Possible sibling: Alonzo Lucha

Alonzo, son of Anthony & Margaret LUCHA died February 13, 1862 at 13 y's 9 m.& 2 d. (Source: Newcomb Cemetery listings, Kent County, Ontario)

1861 Census, Howard, Ontario: Alonzo is listed as "Lonzo Lucio", age 12, living with the Cameron family, Howard Township, Kent County, Ontario

Note: Louis & Catherine’s eldest son was named Alonzo

 Death: Louis Levias Lucia is buried in the White Lake Cemetery near Nobleford, AB.  His  headstone reads:

Lewis Lovias LUCHIA   Born May 13, 1833

Died February 23, 1905

JOSEPH WALL 1805 Ireland -1872 Quebec

 

Hi, my brickwall:  Searching for parents for my 2g grandfather, Joseph Wall born c. 1805 in Cloughjordan, Tipperary, Ireland, died Dec. 21, 1872 in Shawville, Quebec.  May have immigrated to Canada via the US in 1835.  Married Feb. 4, 1829/30 in Modreeny, Tipperary, Ireland to Anne Long born c 1802 died Oct 5, 1888 in Shawville, Quebec.  Her parents are also a brickwall.
